Shiite Muslims celebrate Ashura Day to commemorate the suffering of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad's grandson, who was killed in a battle near the Iraqi city of Kerbala in 680 A.D, Karbala. The Battle of Karbala is commemorated during an annual 10-day period held every Muharram by the Shi'ah as well as many Sunnis, culminating on its tenth day, Ashura. It is widely regarded as an event which saved Islam.
